We have been fortunate for a lot of things, but having the same initials “JG” felt kismet. It helped us name our endeavor JG Bison. To us, it's so much more than a name or a ranch - it's a venue for educating about and advocating for our beloved bison.
“Bison are such magnificent animals. They are majestic creatures that are usually calm and relaxed, but willing to fight strongly and aggressively for what they want. The mentality of bison is something all should strive for. They stand their ground, have a tough hide, keep moving on, cherish wide open spaces, have a strong spirit, roam wild and free, and let the chips fall where they may. To be in the presence of bison is a very powerful and relaxing feeling and to experience that and share with others is my why.”
“Bison continually teach me about life in a profound way. I often lose sight of what is important & fill my head with draining worry. Nature is hard, but the outcome of that challenge should be a deeper appreciation for the good times. Bison help me simplify natural complexity and focus on the present - giving me a higher level of appreciation for my own existence. To be around that, to care for that, and to share it with others is my why.”
While we have been involved in the bison industry for many years, our learning is never complete. We attend numerous conference and ranch tours each year to expand our knowledge of caring for and managing both the land and the bison. Stewardship always evolves with new research and technology, continual learning ensures we implement sound practices.
Our learning and education extends to earning various certifications including those offered through Beef Quality Assurance such as: Cow-Calf Certification, Stocker/Backgrounder Certification, Feed Yard Certification, and Transportation Certification for the Famer and Rancher as well as for the Professional Driver.
Every fall, bison producers round up their herds for annual vaccinations and health checks. While, these events can be stressful for the bison, they are necessary. Experienced and knowledgeable hands help lower the stress during the round ups, and we are grateful to help our friends and neighbors out during these times.
To raise superior bison through holistic and humane practices, focusing on the nature of the animal and the land, and putting into service the ranch and herd as educational tools. "Do it for the bison"
To provide an optimal environment for bison to thrive, for people to learn about bison through engaging experience, and for people to make a connection to the ranching lifestyle as an essential element of life.
